Nacida en Alsacia (Francia), como delata su apellido alemán, de madre artista surrealista llamada Huguette en el año en que terminó la Segunda Guerra Mundial, Christine Spengler se trasladó a Madrid a los siete años para vivir con sus tíos. Estudió literatura francesa y española y, en un inicio, aspiraba a ser escritora.
Durante su juventud en Madrid, fue una visitante habitual del Museo del Prado, donde admiraba a artistas como Velázquez, Dalí o El Bosco, referentes en su primera etapa como fotógrafa, cuando aún desconocía figuras como Robert Capa. Junto a Madrid, Ibiza ocupa también un lugar importante en su vida, ligada a los veranos de su infancia.
A los 23 años, Christine y su hermano menor Eric viajaron a Chad, en plena guerra Toubou. Allí comenzó a fotografiar soldados con la cámara de su hermano, lo que llevó a que ambos fueran detenidos y encarcelados durante 23 días mientras se determinaba si eran espías o periodistas.
Born in Alsace (France), as her German surname suggests, to a surrealist artist mother named Huguette in the year World War II ended, Christine Spengler moved to Madrid at the age of seven to live with her uncles. She studied French and Spanish literature and initially aspired to become a writer.
During her youth in Madrid, she was a frequent visitor to the Prado Museum, where she admired artists such as Velázquez, Dalí, and Bosch—key references in her early photographic development, before she was aware of figures like Robert Capa. Alongside Madrid, Ibiza also holds an important place in her life, linked to her childhood summers.
At the age of 23, Christine and her younger brother Eric traveled to Chad during the Toubou War. There, she began photographing soldiers with her brother’s camera, leading to their arrest and 23-day imprisonment while authorities determined whether they were spies or journalists.
