David Wojnarowicz (1954–1992) was a New York–based multidisciplinary artist—photographer, writer, filmmaker, and activist—whose work embodies the political and emotional urgency of the East Village scene. Shaped by a turbulent childhood and street life, he developed a hybrid practice spanning image, text, and performance. After being diagnosed with HIV, his work became a powerful act of resistance addressing AIDS, institutional violence, and queer political and cultural dissent.
