La artista, hija del reconocido compositor y empresario panameño Carlos Eleta Almarán, se formó inicialmente en Historia del Arte en el Finch College de Nueva York, donde despertó su interés por la fotografía. Posteriormente amplió su formación en el International Center of Photography (ICP) y continuó su aprendizaje trabajando junto a fotógrafos como Ken Heyman y George Tyce, además de realizar estudios de investigación social en la New School for Social Research.
Durante la década de 1960 desarrolló sus primeros trabajos en el marco de una cooperativa internacional de fotógrafos dedicada a la producción de reportajes en distintos países. Entre 1972 y 1973 ejerció como docente de fotografía en la Universidad de Costa Rica. En 1974 se trasladó a Panamá, donde decidió alternar su residencia entre la capital y la ciudad caribeña de Portobelo, iniciando una etapa de trabajo independiente.
Entre sus proyectos destacados se encuentra Solentiname, un trabajo dedicado a Ernesto Cardenal realizado en colaboración con Gloria Guardia, que refleja su interés por la investigación visual y el contexto social y cultural de América Latina.
The artist, daughter of the renowned Panamanian composer and businessman Carlos Eleta Almarán, initially studied Art History at Finch College in New York, where she developed a growing interest in photography. She later trained at the International Center of Photography (ICP) and continued her education working alongside photographers such as Ken Heyman and George Tyce, as well as undertaking social research studies at the New School for Social Research.
During the 1960s, she produced her first photographic works as part of an international photographers’ cooperative focused on documentary projects in various countries. Between 1972 and 1973, she taught photography at the University of Costa Rica. In 1974, she moved to Panama, where she divided her time between the capital city and the Caribbean town of Portobelo, beginning a new phase of independent photographic practice.
Among her notable projects is Solentiname, a work dedicated to Ernesto Cardenal created in collaboration with Gloria Guardia, reflecting her sustained interest in visual research and the social and cultural contexts of Latin America.
