Pionero en la renovación de la fotografía como lenguaje artístico, Robert Frank (Zúrich, Suiza, 1924 – Nueva Escocia, Canadá, 2019) cambió para siempre la manera de mirar el mundo a través de una cámara. Esta exposición se presenta como una oportunidad excepcional para redescubrir uno de los proyectos fotográficos más influyentes del siglo XX, convertido ya en una declaración legendaria —y todavía muy debatida— sobre Estados Unidos y sobre la propia fotografía.
La muestra reúne la serie completa de Los Americanos, realizada durante el viaje que Frank emprendió por Estados Unidos a mediados de los años cincuenta. A lo largo de ese recorrido, su optimismo inicial fue desvaneciéndose a medida que conocía de primera mano las desigualdades, el consumismo y las tensiones sociales del país. Publicadas en 1958 en un libro homónimo, estas imágenes —hoy icónicas— provocaron en su momento un impacto profundo por su honestidad y su capacidad para mostrar aquello que muchos preferían ignorar.
Además del conjunto íntegro de fotografías de este viaje —prestado por la Maison Européenne de la Photographie de París—, se exhiben también copias de Frank procedentes del International Center of Photography de Nueva York y de colecciones privadas. La exposición permite así revisitar este emblemático proyecto y comprender por qué todavía hoy continúa interpelando a nuevas generaciones.

A pioneer in the renewal of photography as an artistic language, Robert Frank (Zurich, Switzerland, 1924 – Nova Scotia, Canada, 2019) transformed forever the way we see the world through a camera. The exhibition offers an exceptional opportunity to rediscover one of the most influential photographic projects of the 20th century — now a legendary, yet still widely debated, statement on the United States and on photography itself.
The exhibition brings together the complete series of The Americans, created during the journey Frank undertook across the United States in the mid-1950s. Over the course of this trip, his initial optimism gradually faded as he encountered first-hand the country’s inequalities, consumerism and social tensions. Published in 1958 in the eponymous book, these now-iconic images had a profound impact at the time for their honesty and their ability to reveal what many preferred to ignore.
In addition to the full set of photographs from this journey —on loan from the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris— further prints by Frank from the International Center of Photography in New York, as well as from private collections, are also on display. This selection thus allows visitors to revisit this emblematic project and understand why it continues to resonate with new generations today.
