PHotoESPAÑA 2025 reconoce con el máximo galardón del Festival, el Premio PHE, la trayectoria profesional de una figura clave en la historia de la fotografía. Joel Meyerotwitz (Nueva York, EEUU, 1938) transformó el medio con su uso pionero del color, cuando la fotografía artística estaba dominada por el blanco y negro. De hecho, Cape Light (1978), el primero de los más de medio centenar de libros que ha publicado hasta la fecha, contribuyó decisivamente a que la actitud hacia la fotografía en color pasase de la resistencia inicial a la aceptación universal.
A lo largo de su carrera Meyerowitz ha protagonizado más de 350 exposiciones, en las que su capacidad de observación de la condición humana está en el corazón de sus fotografías. Su obra forma parte de las colecciones permanentes del Museo Metropolitano de Arte (Nueva York, EEUU), el Museo Whitney de Arte Estadounidense (Nueva York, EEUU), el MoMA (Nueva York, EEUU), la Tate Modern (Londres, Reino Unido), el Museo Victoria & Albert (Londres, Reino Unido), el Museo de Bellas Artes de Boston (Massachusetts, EEUU), el Instituto de Arte de Chicago (Illinois, EEUU), el Centro Pompidou (París, Francia) y el Rijksmuseum (Ámsterdam, Países Bajos), entre otras destacadas instituciones de todo el mundo.
PHotoESPAÑA 2025 honors a key figure in the history of photography with the Festival’s highest award, the PHE Prize, in recognition of his outstanding professional career. Joel Meyerowitz (New York, USA, 1938) transformed the medium through his pioneering use of color at a time when artistic photography was dominated by black and white. In fact, ‘Cape Light’ (1978), the first of more than fifty books he has published to date, played a decisive role in shifting the perception of color photography from initial resistance to universal acceptance.
Throughout his career, Meyerowitz has held more than 350 exhibitions, in which his keen observation of the human condition lies at the heart of his photographs. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, USA), the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York, USA), MoMA (New York, USA), Tate Modern (London, UK), the Victoria & Albert Museum (London, UK), the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston (Massachusetts, USA), the Art Institute of Chicago (Illinois, USA), the Centre Pompidou (Paris, France), and the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam, Netherlands), among other prestigious institutions worldwide.
